About the IBU
The International Biathlon Union (IBU) is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as the international governing body for the Olympic sport of biathlon. Headquartered in Anif bei Salzburg, the IBU is a non-profit organisation registered in Austria that regulates the sport and oversees the competition organisation worldwide. In cooperation with its 61-member national federations, the IBU uses competitions, events, programmes and other activities to promote and develop participation in Biathlon throughout the world. Role purpose
The IBU took over the governance of Para Biathlon from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as of 1 July 2022. Para Nordic Skiing is now managed by the IBU in cooperation with the International Ski Federation (FIS) through a joint Steering Committee and an IBU-FIS Working Group. Para Biathlon is integrated into FIS’s general Para Snow Sports initiative with the IBU supporting with technical knowledge of Biathlon and helping develop the competition structure from low-level events through to World Cup and World Championships up to the Paralympic Winter Games. Given that Para Biathlon and Para Cross-Country share many of the same athletes, a coordinated approach is necessary to maximise efficiencies and opportunities for the athletes. Following the initial season of joint operation with FIS during the 2022/2023 season, the IBU has now started the process of integration of Para Biathlon into its operations.
