Ukaleq Slettemark uses her voice for real impact

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) and the Biathlon Integrity Unit (BIU) Athlete Ambassadors serve as role models to their peers and the global biathlon family, using their platforms to promote a culture of trust and confidence in the sport of biathlon. Ukaleq Slettemark, one of five IBU Sustainability Athlete Ambassadors, recently participated in a panel discussion at the GSSport24 Conference. Her presence and insights highlighted the critical role athletes play in promoting sustainability within sports.

During the discussion, Ukaleq shared her personal connection to climate action, drawing from her experiences in Greenland: "Seeing the retreat of glaciers with my own eyes has made the impact of climate change very personal for me. It’s not just about the sport; it’s about protecting our world for future generations."

She emphasized the importance of community in fostering sustainability efforts, saying, "Having a sense of community really makes the journey positive. When I found friends in the biathlon community who were also trying to reduce their meat intake, it showed me that change is possible. These conversations are powerful and motivating."

Ukaleq also shared her journey of promoting sustainability through small, everyday actions: "I started by working on my own impact, like repairing clothes and reducing food waste. Sharing these small steps on social media has made me more conscious of my actions and their influence. It’s about showing that even small changes can lead to bigger impacts."

Her peers have been inspired by her actions, with some choosing to repair their gear instead of replacing it. "When my training peers tell me they thought of me before throwing something out, it shows that my efforts are planting seeds for better choices," Ukaleq noted.

Ukaleq’s use of social media to amplify her sustainability message has been a significant part of her strategy: "I realized that my personal journey alone wouldn't have a big impact, but by using my platform to share my experiences, I can reach a broader audience and encourage more people to think about sustainability."

Her participation at the GSSport24 Conference is a testament to the ongoing efforts of the IBU in promoting sustainability within biathlon. The initiatives under the Athlete Ambassadors program have been key to raising awareness and educating ambassadors about the IBU's strategies and action plans.

Ukaleq's inspiring words and commitment to sustainability underscore the positive impact that athletes can have beyond their sporting achievements. Her involvement in the GSSport24 Conference is just one example of how the Athlete Ambassadors are using their influence to promote a culture of integrity, equality and sustainability within biathlon.
