Kati Wilhelm remains a legend in biathlon, who came to the sport after competing in cross-country for Germany in the 1998 Nagano OWG. In a relatively short 10-year career, Kati won seven Olympic medals (3 Gold), 13 IBU WCH medals (5 Gold), the IBU Women’s Total Score title while racking up 21 World Cup individual plus 16 relay victories. Her promise showed up early in her biathlon career when she won the 2001 World Championships Sprint Gold medal topping her teammate Uschi Disl and Liv Grete Poirée. The next season, Kati was the most decorated female biathlete in the 2002 Salt Lake OWG, winning Sprint and Relay Gold plus Pursuit Silver. She remained at the top of the sport throughout her career, with the sprint and pursuit as her “specialities” and a more-than-reliable relay runner in any spot from the first leg to anchor. At the 2009 IBU World Championships in Pyeongchang, Kati won Gold medals in the individual and sprint as well as Silver medals in the pursuit and women’s relay - one year before hanging up her rifle. She capped her storied career with one more Relay Bronze medal at the 2010 Vancouver OWG.
