Dorothea Wierer – Women on the rise

It is needless to say that the past winter was a special one for Dorothea Wierer: first ever Italian to win the BMW IBU World Cup Overall trophy, first ever Italian woman to win gold at the IBU World Championships and third ever athlete to score a win in all current formats in biathlon. With such a stellar 2018-2019 season, the 29-year-old had to feature in this series of clips focussing on the main topics in women’s biathlon.

There are so many fast girls, but I think the shooting is the most exciting part. We girls are sometimes better than the men!”

With a 85% hit rate and some of the fastest range times in the sport, Wierer is of course a strong advocate of female talent on shooting, yet, she believes that her skiing shape is much more important for her.

“For me, it’s fun when I feel really good on skis and can push over my limits. For example, when I know that I am good on skis, but not the best on shooting, it doesn’t matter for me, but if I don’t go on the skis, but I shoot good, I cannot win I think.”

With the highlight of the season being on home soil, Wierer is getting ready for Antholz 2020, even though she is taking it like any other big event in the previous years.

For me it’s never easy, I was never the kind of athlete that was at the top of the shape in the big appointments, my goal was always to be on the top 5 of the overall and this has worked well in the past. In Antholz there will for sure pressure. Everyone wants to do well at home, but for me the most important thing is to get there healthy, motivated and focused on the main goal… and obviously to enjoy it!”
