Norway won 38 times

There were 70 competitions in the BMW IBU World Cup in the 2020/2021 season and Norway won 38 of them. Norwegian women won 17 times (Tiril Eckhoff 13 times), Norwegian men 15 times (Sturla Holm Laegreid seven times) and Norwegian relays six times. In the four-stage competitions all 20 targets were cleared 70 times, in the sprint all 10 targets were cleared 258 times. Eckhoff and JT Boe were the fastest skiers of the season and Franziska Preuss and Laegreid the most accurate shooters from the athletes who finished in the Top 10 in the Total Score standings at the end of the season. We broke down the stats for each competition to give you more insight into the season.

Most wins: individually

Tiril Eckhoff won 13 times, the most by any athlete in the 2020/2021 season. Marte Olsbu Roeiseland won three times, Hanna Oeberg, Julia Simon and Lisa Theresa Hauser two times; one win went to Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold, Dzinara Alimbekava, Dorothea Wierer and Marketa Davidova. Sturla Holm Laegreid was the most successful among men with seven wins, followed by JT Boe with four wins and Tarjei Boe and Quentin Fillon Maillet with three wins each. Simon Desthieux had two wins and Johannes Dale, Arnd Peiffer, Martin Ponsiluoma, Emilien Jacquelin, Sebastian Samuelsson and Lukas Hofer one each.

Most wins: Nations

Norway won 38 competitions, of those 17 women competitions, 15 men competitions and six relays as the most successful nation. France won 12 competitions altogether and Sweden nine.

The men’s field is suddenly much broader

Yes, Norway dominated the men’s competitions (15 wins) and the women’s competitions (17 wins). Nevertheless, there were 12 different men’s winners in the 2020/2021 season compared to six in the 2019/2020 season. JT Boe won 16 times in the 2018/2019 season and 10 times in the 2019/2020 season while battling Martin Fourcade, yet he won ‘only’ four times this season. He was bettered by Sturla Holm Laegreid, who won seven competitions. Just like last season, there were eight different women’s winners in the 2020/2021 season.

Tiril Eckhoff won more points than any man

Tiril Eckhoff won 1,152 points this season, or 100 more than JT Boe, the winner of the men’s Total Score title. This translated into 52.4 points won per competition for Eckhoff compared to 47.8 for JT Boe for the 2020/2021 season. JT Boe won 53.3 points per competition last season, whereas the women’s Total Score winner for the 2019/2020 season, Dorothea Wierer, won 42 points per competition.

Zero Club: Individual

There were three individual competitions in the 2020/2021 season. In every competition in the individual there was at least one athlete that shot 20/20. The only athlete that won the individual with 19/20 in the 2020/2021 season was Lisa Theresa Hauser in Antholz – Anterselva.

Zero Club: Mass Start

There were five mass start competitions in the 2020/2021 season. There were three men and two women mass starts when no athlete managed to shoot 20/20. In five competitions in the mass start only Arnd Peiffer in Hochfilzen and Lisa Theresa Hauser at the IBU World Championships Pokljuka 2021 shot 20/20 in their win.

20/20 WOMEN: 3; the most in one competition: 1 (Pokljuka WCH, Antholz – Anterselva, Hochfilzen week 2)

Zero Club: Pursuit

There were eight pursuit competitions in the 2020/2021 season. There were two men and three women pursuits when no athlete managed to shoot 20/20. Only Tiril Eckhoff in Kontiolahti, Quentin Fillon Maillet in Hochfilzen and Emilien Jacquelin at the IBU World Championships Pokljuka 2021 won with 20/20.

20/20 MEN: 22; the most in one competition: 6 (NMNM week 1)

20/20 WOMEN: 15; the most in one competition: 4 (Pokljuka WCH)

Zero Club: Sprint

There were 10 sprint competitions in the 2020/2021 season. In every competition in the sprint there was at least one athlete that shot 10/10. JT Boe in Oberhof 2 was the only man that won the sprint with 9/10 in the 2020/2021 season. Tiril Eckhoff won five out six sprints with 9/10: Hochfilzen 2, Oberhof 2, NMNM 1, NMNM 2, and Oestersund.
