Preuss: Mama’s Cookies and Recovery for Christmas

For Franziska Preuss, victory at Hochfilzen - the first after almost a five-year wait -wasn’t just a triumph—it was the culmination of perseverance and hope after years of close calls. After a blockbuster week in France and leading the Total Score, she finds balance in staying grounded and embracing her role as an occasional team mentor. With Christmas on the horizon, Preuss is ready to recharge at home, savouring her mom’s cookies and dreaming of recovery for the next round of competitions.

BW: After experiencing many ups and downs, you achieved your second World Cup wins in Hochfilzen after almost five years. What did it mean to you?

FP: It meant a lot to me. I appreciate it so much. Last year, I was close to victory three times, so I thought a really good day would come eventually.

BW: Leading the Total Score has its advantages, but it also brings a sense of responsibility. How do you stay grounded and keep your focus on the next competition?

FP: Right now, it feels easy for me. I don’t feel different; I’m still the same athlete, leading the same daily life. I compete and then go back to the hotel to recover as much as possible. 😉

BW: You are now the most experienced athlete in a largely young and exciting team. How do you see your role?

FP: I believe that every member of the team is very important. It’s fun with everyone. I’ve had three different roommates this year. Of course, I’m happy to have Anna (Weidel) back; she is a good friend of mine. ☺️

BW: Do younger athletes like Tannheimer, Grotian, and Kink ask you for advice?

FP: Sometimes they do. Selina is closer to Vanessa, but the two Julias have questions occasionally, usually about organisational things.

BW: How do you plan to unwind and recharge during the Christmas break?

I plan to spend time at home. I hope to get healthy very soon so I can see my family. However, I won’t meet many people as I need to get fresh energy and recover for the upcoming competitions. I am looking forward to celebrating Christmas with family and friends in the coming years!

BW: Do you have a favourite holiday dish or treat that you always look forward to?

FP: I enjoy many different dishes, so it’s hard to choose just one. However, my mom's Christmas cookies are very important to me.

BW: If you could ask Santa for one thing to help you in the next World Cup races in Oberhof and Ruhpolding, what would it be?

FP: Good health and a fast recovery.

BW: n traditional festive legend and popular culture, Santa Claus's eight reindeer are said to pull a sleigh through the night sky to help him deliver gifts to children on Christmas Eve. Among them are Donder (Thunder in German) and Blitzen (Lightning in German). If you could race in the Single Mixed Relay with one of Santa's reindeer, would you choose Donder or Blitzen?

FP: I need to watch the movie again first before I can decide. It’s been too long! 😉
